2008 Constancy Roman Finish-A-Comic Contest

If you attended Anime Los Angeles this January, you may have been to one of my panels or heard about the Finish-A-Comic Contest. If you attended the "Ludicrous Speed" panel, you will recognize the comic instantly. I put together a page that has one panel and all of its dialogue missing. I asked attendees to fill in the dialogue and the last panel and make up their own story. All participants received a set of Sakura Stickler pens.

During the weekend, we received nearly a hundred submissions. On Sunday, my SCR colleague Christine and I voted on our favorite submissions. We had originally planned for two grand prizes, but because of the sheer number of good submissions, we upped it to four grand prizes, and also passed out about six or more honorable mentions. The grand prizes were either a Sakura Pigma Sensei pen set or a Sakura Micron pen set. All gifts were, naturally, courtesy of Sakura of America.

Thank you all for participating. I hope all of you enjoyed the contest and got something out of it.

First off, the comic we did at the Ludicrous Speed panel. I tidied it up a little bit and added some more shading:

I now present to you the four grand-prize winning submissions!

Ava wins points for a clever story and some really impressive penwork! I especially dig the shading and expressions in the last panel.

Siobhan had both Christine and I rolling on the floor when we read it. We were also impressed by her use of "word background art" in the middle panel. "Critical Misunderstanding", indeed!

Dru, who was selling hats at the booth next door, cleverly directed the fourth text bubble to come out from the box the girl holds, in order to create the most delightfully macabre of the submissions we've received.

Sarah stayed up into the wee hours of the night to finish her submission, and the dedication shows. Wonderfully rendered colors, two extra pages(!) and adorable line work. This submission certainly stood out.
